I spent most of the afternoon being fondled by Motherâs tailor, Roscoe Conti.
Roscoeâs method of fitting a tux involved checking and rechecking the inseam measurement to the point where my inner thigh chafed from all the friction. Iâm pretty sure his inability to get it right had more to do with personal enjoyment than sartorial accuracy. When he finally left, I wondered if I should press charges with the police.
The phone rang. It was Willa.
âHowdy. Whatcha doinâ? I just ran into Wilber Wiley. You remember him, right? We dated a while back, had a bad hairpiece and questionable dental work but sexy as hell in a bald-headed toothless sort of way. I ran into him. Heâs finally lost the toupee, which is a good thing because it smelled like two-week-old fish and looked so much like road-kill vultures would circle whenever he walked outside.â
âDidnât he leave you to join a monastery?â
âSo he said, evidently his religious calling didnât stick because he was shopping for condoms and soft porn at the pharmacy. Or maybe theyâre planning a party at the priory. Isnât that just like a Catholic?â
âKinda busy here, Willa, what do you need?â
âI called Jenna and youâre all set at Austin Monthly. She even offered to run your ad for free if youâre willing to be interviewed for an article theyâre planning about shunned children of the obscenely rich. But hereâs the deal, you need to get in touch today because that article is scheduled to run this week.â
The story sounded ridiculous, but I figured I could use the discount and jotted down Jennaâs contact information.
âGuess what I just did?â I asked.
âDoes it involve small farm animals?â
âNot this time. I got fitted for a new tux.â
âI assume your mother sprang for the cost on account of the big party.â
âYep.â
âLiviaâs pulling out all the stops.â
âShe even called earlier to tell me not to bring Matt.â
Willa paused before saying, âSo youâre bringing Mattâright.â
âIâm not going.â
âOf course youâre going. Weâre all going. I wouldnât miss this party for a heart attack.â
I sighed in frustration. âNo, Willa, Iâm not attending, and neither are you.â
âWhy the hell not?â
âYou canât be serious.â
âSure I am. Look Greg, itâll be a hoot. Cicely even extended the invitation personally, remember? Donât you want to see the freak show? Bring Matt and piss off Liviaâ¦you always enjoy that.â
âWilla, I donât want to go.â
âBut youâre getting a new tux.â
âRight.â
âSo you should go, for that if nothing else. Livia will spit nails if you donât show up.â
âLook, Iâm not going and I donât have time to debate my reasons right now. Iâm busy.â
I said good-bye.
